Materials fee: $100 - $150.
Please join Patti to play, create, work, and expand your boundaries! Would you like to add new options to your repertoire and explore new ways of working and thinking about images on a page? This hands-on workshop is designed for artists and image makers eager to expand their creative repertoire and explore alternative printmaking techniques.
We’ll create one-of-a-kind prints on diverse substrates such as paper, textiles, glass, metal, wood, and more. Through a playful, exploratory process, you’ll work with digital images, hand-drawn marks, illustrations, mono-printing, and hand coloring. Patti will demonstrate techniques for layering, transferring, and combining images, both new and existing, onto various surfaces.
Expanding the Frame:
Make alternative digital prints with inkAID Transfer Film and Transfierez
Use inkAID Receptive Coatings on a variety of surfaces, making any substrate that will safely fit through your printer inkjet ready
Print directly on Awagami inkjet-ready papers, then add transfers, more receptive coatings, marks, color, and wax
What you’ll learn:
How to make image transfers with inkAID Transfer Film and compare two different inkAID Transfierez solutions
How to coat and print (on a pigment printer) to a variety of surfaces with inkAID Receptive Coatings
Creative techniques to combine digital imagery with analog processes such as mono-printing and trace mono-printing
Mark making with inks, R&F drawing sticks, colored pencils, charcoal, oil pastels, and more
How to incorporate transfers into encaustic work (wax layers)
Methods for building complex, layered compositions
How film transfers compare to prints made on inkjet-ready Awagami papers, how beautifully those papers work with wax, and how to add transfers to them
Finishing techniques for a professional presentation
Bonus: pre-workshop Zoom class
Before the in-person workshop, you’ll join a Zoom session that covers:
Preparing your images for film transfers
Making your own film transfers vs. sending to a lab
Combining drawings, textures, and digital photos
Planning mixed-media compositions
Inspiring examples from other artists
Digital-to-analog process insights
The art of play, experimentation, and embracing wabi-sabi
Using transfers as stand-alone images or as components within larger works

About Patti Russotti
Artist, explorer, maker, and educator, Patricia Russotti’s current work is focused on entropy, negentropy, nature, and the small things she stumbles upon within the existing world. Russotti is passionate about the examination of nature, and the alchemical magic that occurs within natural phenomena and the creative process.
Patti’s work has been consistently showcased through solo, group, and juried exhibitions, and is held in international private and corporate collections. Her practice reflects a breadth and depth of experience and skill in image making (including analog, digital, alternative, and historic processes), workflow, and digital output to a variety of substrates, such as fabric and washi. Russotti has been training and presenting on Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom since the first versions of the applications and uses these tools in the creation of her work.
Currently, she creates and offers workshops online and in person to help emerging and established artists combine digital and analog tools to expand their art practice and clarify their intent. Russotti believes in creating a loop of working digital to analog to digital to analog, and in the impact that has on one’s practice.
Her evolving methodology is continually featured at national and international conferences, where she has been a regular presenter since the 1980s. She is the co-author of Digital Photography Best Practices and Workflow Handbook: A Guide to Staying Ahead of the Workflow Curve (Elsevier/Focal Press, 2010).
Patti holds M.S. and Ed.S. degrees from Indiana University and spent four decades as a professor, now Emeritus, at Rochester Institute of Technology, most recently in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.
