Featured Class:
Hard Cover Books: Bradel Binding

Saturday - Sunday
March 13th - 14th, 2027
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$225 for 2 days.
$45 materials fee.

Make a custom hardcover book with sewn signatures on linen tapes using traditional bookbinding processes. Bradel bound books are unique in that the spine and cover boards are separate. The separate spine creates an opportunity for unique customization, including color and a variety of shapes, while also allowing easy repair in the event of the most common book failure: endsheet separation.

Students are encouraged to bring their own interior paper if they wish to create a watercolor, mixed media, or lined journal. The instructor will provide blank archival, 25% cotton paper (Mohawk Superfine 80T soft-white, eggshell finish) for an approximately A5 sketchbook. It handles pencil, pen, ink, and marker with remarkable flexibility and resistance to bleed-through. Students are also encouraged to bring any papers, book cloth, or other material they want to incorporate into the book’s construction.

No previous experience required. You’ll learn everything you need to make hard cover books at home.

Participants will come away with:

• A custom hardcover Bradel bound book with sewn signatures on linen tapes

• The skills to make hard cover books at home

• Tools to keep: awl, bone folder, glue brush, and PVA glue jar

About Kat Mergens

Kat Mergens is an interdisciplinary bookbinder, printmaking artist, and teacher. They are the founder of Oxide Press & Bindery, an independent book arts studio established in 2019, and their books are in private collections and have been commissioned by clients including MESO PDX and NIKE. Mergens specializes in intaglio printing, hardcover, sewn books, and box and portfolio construction using traditional binding techniques and archival materials.

Kat has taught drawing, monoprint, linoleum block printing, letterpress, and book arts at San José State University, Portland State University, Catlin Gabel Adult Education, Signal Return, and the Independent Publishing Resource Center.

Kat’s interdisciplinary art practice incorporates their work in land stewardship, exploring relationships between material, place, and systems of knowledge. Working across book arts, printmaking, participatory mapping, and natural pigments, Mergens uses research and material processes to examine how relationships with land are formed and understood. Taking materials out of the waste stream is a core commitment of Kat’s practice, and they have repurposed baby onesies, kimono silk, and deadstock fabric in their method of turning fabric waste into book cloth.

Mergens holds an MFA in Pictorial Art from San José State University and studied at UC Berkeley Extension in San Francisco. From 2021 to 2023, Kat was the Gallery Manager at Portland State University, and in 2023 was awarded a RACC Art3C Grant for their work in the Columbia River Gorge.
